THE MOULD-BREAKER 1/3

ABOUT ME

A self-proclaimed black sheep, I have a penchant for challenging the norm and pushing boundaries. I would always rather try and fail than not try at all! I like to think that my passion for music, art and creativity can be seen and felt throughout the Ovolo experience.

TURNING DREAMS INTO REALITY 2/3

THE STORY GOES…

I am proudly Hong Kong born and raised, but I started my career outside of hospitality in my father’s watchmaking business. In reaction to the changing times, I made the difficult decision to close that business and pursue one of my lifelong dreams of starting my own hotel business. I purchased my first hotel in 2002, and now we’ve expanded to 10 hotels across Hong Kong and Australia, with more on the horizon – it’s only up from here!

FREDDY MERCURY, NEGRONI & NEON SIGNS 3/3

A MAN INSPIRED

Growing up in the 1980s, I was truly inspired by rock legends of the time - and no one more so than David Bowie. I admired not only his music but also his continuous self-reinvention as an artist, his ability to adapt to the times and take his fans on that journey with him. I’m also a Negroni enthusiast and a neon sign aficionado, but most of all I like to have fun and enjoy life – and encourage everyone around me to do the same!

THE HOT TOPICS 1/3

DO IT YOUR WAY

Why walk anyone’s path but your own? I know as well as anyone that journey to becoming a self-made entrepreneur is filled with challenges and moments of doubt. It takes bravery and perseverance. Along the way, I learned to stay on my path – even when my vision was questioned. I enjoy sharing my story with other budding entrepreneurs and hoteliers, as I know how important it is to have someone as a sounding board in those early years.

THE HOT TOPICS 2/3

CREATIVE LEADERSHIP

How can leaders increase creativity as their business grows? Don’t let your innovation flatline. Innovation, creativity and growth are three topics I have prioritised throughout my career. I’m always willing to share how I maintain my own creative eye and inspire my teams to think with an innovative growth mindset, exceed customer expectations and challenge the status quo. When everyone else is looking to zig, I like to zag!

THE HOT TOPICS 3/3

STAYING NIMBLE AND AGILE

What does the hotel industry of tomorrow look like? I try to stay ahead of the pack. I say what I think, I back my instincts and I trust my gut when it comes to decision making. I’ve got a lot to say about the future of hospitality – the changes in customer expectations, the outlook of modern travel, and innovations that will transform the hotel industry in the next 10-20 years.

I BASE A LOT OF MY BUSINESS DECISIONS ON INSTINCT. IF MY GUT TELLS ME TO GO FOR IT, I KNOW IT’S THE RIGHT DECISION.
IN BUSINESS AND IN LIFE, CHANGE IS CONSTANT. I’VE LEARNT TO CONTINUALLY ADAPT TO STAY RELEVANT AND STAY AHEAD OF THE CURVE.
I’VE NEVER BEEN AFRAID TO DO THINGS DIFFERENTLY. AS THE SAYING GOES – ONLY A DEAD FISH SWIMS WITH THE CURRENT.

LET'S DO THE TIME WARP
(Just click on a date)
HOME SWEET
HONG KONG
1951
My father, beloved Shyam Sundar Jhunjhnuwala relocates from India to Hong Kong, establishing the family watchmaking business in 1953. A decision that would go on to shape my future.
GIRISH MEETS WORLD
1963
Born on 2nd September 1963, I carry the textbook traits of a Virgo. My pragmatic and perfectionist nature led me into entrepreneurship, yet I was also considered the black sheep amongst his siblings, spurring my innate curiosity, bold thinking and creative nature.
START ‘EM UP YOUNG
1984
After completing my Bachelor of Science in Business Administration at the University of Southern California in two years, I returned to Hong Kong to join the reins of the family business with my elder brother, Surya.
500,000 REASONS WHY
1988
Surya and I set up my family’s first watch factory in Shenzhen, mainland China. A second factory followed four years later in the city of Dongguan and with that, our business was producing 500,000 watches per month.
A DEFINING YEAR
1997
My father passed away. An incredibly wise and forward thinking man, he was always a teacher, mentor and guiding light to myself and my four siblings. Today, I continues to employ and teach the lessons I learnt from my father in all aspects of my work and life.
A SUNSET INDUSTRY
2001
I caught the first glimpses of the digital age, with pocket-size devices featuring the in-built clocks, alarms and so much more than a traditional wristwatch – the timekeeping industry was becoming commoditised, and one of the few to have gone backward in technology. I had the foresight to take the emotionally difficult, yet commercially wise, decision to sell the family business.
ZIG WHEN OTHERS ZAG
2010
The Global Financial Crisis bit Hong Kong hard. I headed in a new direction, repositioning the serviced apartments as hotels and choosing the Ovolo brand name from his collection of serviced apartments. Disrupting the hotel industry with an ultra-creative hotel brand anchored in the virtue of effortless living with it’s all-inclusive brand standard.
